Thanksgiving will always stand as a reminder to be grateful for even the smallest blessings. In this season of giving thanks, we are constantly reminded to be thankful for health, friendship, family, and yes - for the second chances offered because of those who have said YES to organ donation.

One donor can save up to eight lives. Yet organ donation is rarely discussed because of the  hesitancy to discuss matters evoking the end of life. The nature of Taylor’s story has begun to transform the conversation, bringing about a shift in perception to reveal that donor registration is an empowering act of living.

We reached a special milestone recently in our work at Taylor’s Gift Foundation as we made our 100th Legacy Gift to assist a donor family with an immediate need.

The Legacy Gift program was launched in September 2013 and provides financial assistance for families touched by organ donation.  The financial support has provided help with a number of needs following the passing of a loved one, including funeral/burial/cremation, utility bills, housing (rent/mortgage/hotel), transportation, food and clothing.  Taylor’s Gift is the only foundation in the nation with a program set up with Organ Procurement Organizations to provide financial assistance to donor families.  We are so proud and honored to provide this resource.

The Beauty Of Life: A Note From TGF Executive Director, Emily Allbright

I immediately see life when looking out the window of my office.  Life in the sounds of nature, including the red cardinal who I often see flying past my window.

I don’t remember ever noticing so much about life before I took this role as Executive Director of Taylor’s Gift Foundation and even noticing or ever seeing the beauty of the red cardinal.  The cardinal is known to be a symbol of someone who has passed and often referenced as an angel who is near when a cardinal appears.

A Legacy Gift: Helping a Widow Say Her Final Goodbyes to Her Husband

I received a call from a Care Coordinator with a special request for our Legacy Gift program. A widow contacted her to say she was not going to be able to attend her husband’s funeral without transportation assistance.  She lives about one hour away from where the funeral would take place and she did not have the ability to drive due to her failing eyesight.  Her family support system was gone with the recent passing of her husband and they lost their son in 2014.  Her husband was one who had a giving spirit and the gift of life he gave in the end was that as an organ donor.  He served our great country and was being buried with full military honors.

The Journey Into Hope: My First Legacy Gift

Imagine what your state of mind would be (or has been) when you receive the devastating news of your loved ones passing. Then, picture knowing that your treasured loved one gave the most amazing gift in their final goodbye - the gift of life as an organ donor.

While it’s a fact that families of organ donors do not experience any additional medical costs due to the choice to donate, donor families are still left facing costly emotional and financial burdens. Not only did this gift of life came out of a tragedy of their loved ones passing, but the costs associated with a funeral to honor this loved one's life and other unavoidable expenses don’t stop when life feels like it has. Consequently, there are often basic needs that will go unmet for donor families - from funeral expenses, food, clothing, shelter, and various other monthly bills.

Experiencing first hand what it’s like to be a donor family, founders of Taylor's Gift Foundation Tara and Todd Storch quickly noticed an overwhelming need that families in situations just like theirs were facing. In response, Taylor’s Gift established the Legacy Gift program in an effort to provide happier, healthier, and brighter tomorrows to those touched by organ donation.

My First Legacy Gift

A few weeks into my time as Executive Director for Taylor's Gift, we received a Legacy Gift request.
