How Losing My Brother Taught Me To Outlive Myself

Two words that, when separate, seem innocuous; however, when they are put together, they can pack quite a punch.  As Yoda, the wise mentor from Star Wars, would probably tell the Jedi council if those words came up in a meeting, “Ponder upon these, I must.”

Too often, I feel, many of us, myself included, take many things in life for granted.  How many times do we wake up and just go about the morning routine, not even thinking about how each day, each minute, each second, is a GIFT, not a given right?

What Does “Outlive Yourself” Mean? It Means Leaving a Legacy of Kindness

Written by: Josefina Mendez, 2016 Taylor's Gift Foundation Scholarship recipient presented by NIKE North America Merchandising

To give to others is the greatest gift you can give to yourself. Outliving myself means making a positive impact on the lives of those around me: both in big and small ways. In fact, no act of kindness is too small. I try to make it my goal every day to make another person smile, or their day a little brighter. The world is hard— there are challenges at every corner, and what, at times, seems like insurmountable mountains to climb in front of you. But no one needs to tackle his or her challenges alone. With acts of kindness, with generosity, we can all be there for each other—and make the world just a little easier.

How Life Changed My Perspective On Organ Donation

Written by Diane Lightbody

I’ve been an organ donor for years, but it wasn’t a decision I made early in life.  When I was first asked if I wanted to be listed as a donor, I declined.  I was a teen getting my driver’s license.  At that time in my life the thought of organ donation, quite frankly, freaked me out.  I had horrible images and thoughts that would pop in my head about donation – and I did not want any part of it.  (Did I mention I can’t watch horror movies – even now?)  Yep.  I am a bonafide, card-carrying wimp when it comes to anything remotely horror-ish, and, at that time, organ donation was squarely in that compartment in my brain.  As I gained more life experience I began to see that my fears about donation were completely unfounded.  (If you have any fears, doubts, or questions, I highly recommend researching on TaylorsGift.org, or donatelife.net, both of which debunk common misconceptions and provide information about organ donation.)

An Incredible Night - The 2016 Outlive Yourself Awards

Last night, nearly 300 guests joined in celebrating Kathy Aulson and Robin Bagwell, the two Outlive Yourself Award honorees, at the Belo Mansion in Dallas, Texas. The event was presented by Methodist Dallas Transplant Institute and all funds raised from the event went to support the work and Taylor's Gift mission of Regifting Life, Renewing Health, and Restoring Families. One area that proceeds will assist with is the organization’s Legacy Gift program. The program was established to provide financial assistance to individuals and families touched by organ donation and assists with needs such as burial expenses, utilities, rent, and more. By providing this level of support to the donor families, Taylor’s Gift Foundation works to help those who are facing immediate need.
